Burning of Leaves Wastes Valuable Material

Burning is an easy—and wasteful way to tidy up home premises of fallen leaves, garden advisers of the U. S. Department of Agriculture say. Every autumn form of this valuable raw material go up in smoke instead of being saved to benefit vegetable and flower gardens, shrubs, and trees on the home grounds. The home-maker as well as the man of the house should be interested in using this free gift of nature to improve family property. It takes little trouble or space to establish a sale of leaves so that they can decompose into homes or leaf rancid which not only has fortifying value but, more important, tests soil in shape to hold moisture and work easily.

Some cities offer leaves cleaned from streets to gardeners for home compost piles. Such leaves are satisfactory only if free of oil or other chemical wastes or contaminants.
